"The use of techniques based on total physical response (tpr) to increase students listening comprehension in an efl classroom"

Abstract

"The importance of listening has changed over the past years. Listening used to be defined as the ignored skill. Listening skill was believed to be learned automatically through the practice of grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. It was very amazing as listening played a very important (Hedge, 2000). As Pokrikiva (2010, p.61) claims listening as ""a receptive communicative skill. It provides the aural imput as the basis for development for all remaining language skills. By developing their ability to listen well, learners become more independent, as by hearing accurately they are much more to be able to interact in a foreing language effectively"". This pedagogical essay had as purpose to teach English using Total Physical Response (TPR) techniques as a tool to increase students listening comprehension in a third-grade group of the secondary school ""Tecnica No. 1"". The study analyzes the application procedure of the techniques in order to know which way the imput is processed. Additionally, it evaluates the features, the application of the TPR techniques to determine if the tool could help teenagers to increase their listening comprehension elevating their self-confidence and motivation in class as a result. The challenges faced before and after the application of the techniques are presented, as well as, the impact that these had in students academic register and the different behaviors during the class. Finally, the conclusions of the study, suggestions for future practices, and the resources that helped during the investigation process. "
